An 18-year-old Hilo woman has been crowned Miss Kauai 2013.
Alexandra Roth, a junior majoring in Japanese and communications at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, won the scholarship pageant title on March 9 at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center.
The Waiakea High School graduate won the pageant’s talent competition singing “Gimme Gimme” from the Broadway musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”
The win earned Roth a $10,000 scholarship as well as the title. A graduate of Waiakea High School, she is a junior at the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a double major in Japanese and Communications. Her pageant platform is “encouraging a global education,” a theme she said was inspired by her recent yearlong exchange studies in Nagoya, Japan, which she described as “a life-changing experience.”
“Through the Miss America Organization and my platform, I hope to enable more opportunities for students to develop intercultural skills in preparation for a global society,” Roth said.
As Miss Kauai, Roth is eligible to vie for the title of Miss Hawaii on June 8 at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu.
“I’m really excited to compete and I hope to represent Kauai, Oahu, and the Big Island well,” she said.
Roth is the daughter of Hawaii County Prosecutor Mitch Roth and Noriko Yamada Roth, a bilingual administration assistant for the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s Subaru Telescope.
